  • Good film in spite of its US political nuances and complexities in their polarised society

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I suppose I should, first of all, crack the joke that all reviewers will wish to get into their first paragraph : 'Beware The Ides Of March' LOL. I feel so much better for that !

But actually viewers need not beware. This is a good film that British audiences will enjoy.......and without the political controversies that it will undoubtedly engender in the polarised and politically-paranoid American society. The sad part is that I personally believe, having visited the US many times and having heard much from friends there, that this movie may not be too far from the actuality of life in the political jungle in that mixed-up country.

The stage-play, which is, I believe, adapted by Mr Clooney, was a success......and I am sure the film will achieve the same status in America. In the UK, I think I'll leave it as a 3.5 star, and skip the opportunity for a fourth star. It's good but not THAT good.

Clooney is excellent as the director. There is more to this man than the pretty-face image. He is also a generous professional who hands a wonderful leading role ( while he himself plays second-lead) to the outstanding Ryan Gosling.

I cannot praise his performance enough.

I also single out Evan Rachel Wood as excellent.

The story ? Well, that's where we run into a few problems......it's hard to see beyond the obvious plot of goody v baddy , and the message conveying total cynicism about American politics. Beyond those obvious aspects, the story kinda meanders ........and gets a bit lost at times.

Yes, there are some very memorable scenes and some fine acting, with many twists and turns and a big finale......but there are also some 'gaps' and 'padding' and unanswered questions about large and small points of detail.

As I do not wish to give the plot away, I say only that it turns out to be a moving film, but leaves a sour taste of cynicism ( which, although intentional, does not make it any the less galling for the viewer).

This will undoubtedly do well at the box office, may even pick up some Awards (if so, I hope Gosling heads the Award lists, as well as the excellent director). But , as for the movie itself........no awards from me, I'm afraid. Just a review that says 'Good Film', make sure to see it. It's worth it

BORING!!!!! Was surprised...a lot of good actors in this film, but after about 10 minutes found myself looking for some distraction from the film. Started with noodles then went on to ice-cream. After 28 mins, I gave up! I suggest if u want to watch this film, arm yourself with some distraction...popcorn, magazine...anything!

An enjoyable story, giving some insight into the workings of the various election systems in America - not always in a good light! Gosling, Clooney and Hoffman are decent, and the film moves along at a reasonably nice pace, too. It's fairly predictable, however, although I'd still recommend it overall.

Excellent political thriller. Tense atmosphere. Brilliant support from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti. My husband and I really enjoyed it.

  • A superb political drama that doesn't pull punches

One of the best films I've seen recently, and one of the best political films I've ever seen. The performances are utterly believable, the story is gripping and paced beautifully, the dialogue is excellent. Most impressively, it paints the dark world of political intrigue without flinching and without being over the top. You reach the end and find yourself not knowing who the good guys are any more and yet understanding why they did what they did, and that is a very hard balance to achieve. A wonderful, intelligent, fascinating film.
