I'm under no illusion...this is great !
By PaulaWestwood (397 reviews) from Ashton-Under-Lyne , 12 Mar 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
This is a beautifully filmed really good film, that is made great by its actors. Edward Norton is just superb as Eisenheim the illusionist, but Paul Giamatti as the inspector, Jessica Biel as Sophie and Rufus Sewell as Crown Prince leopold are similarly excellent. The whole thing just comes together really well and makes for a really interesting film.
Although it is just a story, it does have a whiff of reality in the portrayal of Crown Prince of Austria, who was a real odd bod, who, to all intents and purposes ended the Habsburg monarchy on his controvertial death with his mistress in 1889. It is still not known if it was really suicide or if they were murdered.
This film is well worth a watch.- Was this review helpful to you?

(981)i liked it... but not a lot...
By GordonVader (106 reviews) from Emerald City, oz , 10 Jan 2013[Highly rated reviewer]
ok so I have decided in my infinite wisdom to review every single film i have ever seen on love film... Currently still on the letter 'A' OK another alphabetic anomaly.. So in fine old class a fueled hollywood paranoia this film was one of a batch of movies about victorian magicians all released around the same time ... others being the Prestige and that one about Houdini with Guy Pierce...
So what about this one. well it's better than the guy pierce number, but falls short of The Prestige... Oddly despite being, kinda, plausible, it seems far more far fetched than the pure sci fi of The Prestige... The story is suitably twisty and the fellow with the beard was great, but it was a wee bit too smaltzy...- Was this review helpful to you?

Spellbinding, was there a pact with the devil?
By a customer , 03 Dec 2012I was sceptical but completely won over from the first opening scenes. The film has a magical air about it and I was kept to the edge of my seat right to the end. The illusions were smooth, slick and mesmerising, and although were an integral feature of the plot, it is the love story between the two main characters that is the central theme. I also love that it is a period setting. I wish I had watched this film sooner.- Was this review helpful to you?
