I'm under no illusion...this is great !By PaulaWestwood (397 reviews) from Ashton-Under-Lyne , 12 Mar 2007
[Highly rated reviewer]This is a beautifully filmed really good film, that is made great by its actors. Edward Norton is just superb as Eisenheim the illusionist, but Paul Giamatti as the inspector, Jessica Biel as Sophie and Rufus Sewell as Crown Prince leopold are similarly excellent. The whole thing just comes together really well and makes for a really interesting film.
Although it is just a story, it does have a whiff of reality in the portrayal of Crown Prince of Austria, who was a real odd bod, who, to all intents and purposes ended the Habsburg monarchy on his controvertial death with his mistress in 1889. It is still not known if it was really suicide or if they were murdered.
This film is well worth a watch.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideMy wife and me really enjoyed watching this film.
As the titles suggest the illusion we see and how we interupt this was amazing throughout the film.
We were not expecting the twist at the end at all.
My wife did like watching Edward Norton, never seen him in a film before, so I think we will be watching a few more now with him in it.
The IllusionistBy a customer , 31 Oct 2011My daughter recommended this film to me and I have to say that both my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it; the cast were excellent in their portrayal of the characters and the filming was beautiful.
I would definitely recommend this film.
This is EntertainmentBy a customer , 28 Oct 2011The plot was a bit obvious but I found this a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes or so.
Is that the ghost of the plot I see?By Lupusrobustus (6 reviews) from London , 31 Aug 2011
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideAn enjoyable film, but with a few of those glaring plot holes and little errors which really get to a pernickety one such as myself.... (really, don't read on if you haven't seen the film)... for example, the family of the Duchess don't seem interested in her death, or in questioning this 'family doctor' of hers.... and, most irritating of all, somehow the straw in the stables doesn't get changed for several months, so the locket and the emerald are still lying there for our hapless inspector to fall upon when he finally gets round to it. And how did he know to look in the stable anyway?
It's stylishly done, absorbing nonsense, but the 'thrill' is never really there; I didn't feel much suspense, nor ever believe she was really dead. I feel it could have been a tighter, edgier and more exciting film had more attention been paid to smartening up the plot and the pace. Pretty, old-world candyfloss.
Interesting and unusualBy Jellydoll (13 reviews) from Scarborough , 29 Aug 2011An interesting and unusual story played well by the leading characters. A nice twist and always a pleasure to watch Edward Norton.
