LOVEFiLM Review

A simple and cheap move to make, this has something a little extra than most horror movies out there.

Watch it at night with all the lights off
By a customer , 08 Jul 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
It is a slow moving film, but that's no reason not to watch it. The creepy 'jump-out-of-your-skin' bits are excellent. A good old fashioned ghost story. Can't believe it got such bad reviews on here and on the IMDB (Internet Movie Database) website. I nearly didn't watch it because of negative reviews, but am glad I did...- Was this review helpful to you?

(96)a good film in here somewhere
By Rerek (4 reviews) from Thatcham , 22 May 2013I really tried to like this film. It starts off slowly and builds realistic characters. The idea of amateur ghost chasers in a possibly haunted house on its last night is a good one. It is a classic 'tease' ghost story, is there a ghost or not? Are they seeing things or imagining them? but it spirals out of control and the last 30 minutes are just plain bonkers. The characters suddenly start acting out of all logic and the ghosts make no sense whatsoever. All the good work of the first half of the film is wasted. The closing shot was utterly blown! It could have been much more satisfying (see the film and you'll get the idea)- Was this review helpful to you?

An average horror film
By TheRealRCM (4 reviews) , 04 May 2013The Innkeepers started with promise, creepy location, spooky back story, etc. all the usual gems. I liked the suspense and genuinely jumped at some of the scares. The best part was towards the end, which, without giving anything away, keeps you in suspense all the way, leaving you with a psychological twist at the end (the big finale). However there were some weak points for me. Firstly in the title one would expect the story to focus on the 'Innkeepers'. It mainly focuses on Sara Paxton's character (Claire), whose story develops some depth and empathy. On the contrary the other 'innkeeper' Luke (Pat Healey) spends most of the early to middle segments of the films fooling around or sleeping. Whereas this could have shown the difference between devotee of the supernatural (Claire) vs. groupie (Pat) I still feel Pat's performance as Luke was well below par. This in turn weakened the story as there was no strong counterpart to Claire. Furthermore the scenes with Kelly McGillis (with the exception of the last few scenes) generally did not add to the story, and seemed at times irrelevant. Final comments overall an average horror delivering enough scares and suspense to keep me interested throughout. Also a very good ending I believe designed to make you think whether what you had seen was actually paranormal or not? Not to be bought as there was only minimal subtext and plot beyond the main story so I do not see it offering anything new on repeat viewings, but definitely to be viewed once.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not what I expected
By a customer , 27 Apr 2013Very nice looking film, likeable characters, but very very slow moving - even to a fan of that sort of film. If this hadn't been classed as a horror, it might have been better, but ultimately there's more emphasis on the will-they-won't-they romance between the main characters and mystery than there is on horror. Very confusing film, could have been brilliant but it seems Ti West took a chance on something new and it didn't quite pay off.- Was this review helpful to you?

A Great Ghost Story, Gore Hounds Avoid
By Otter379 (58 reviews) , 22 Apr 2013This isn't a splatter movie but a slow burning ghost story. A very good one at that. The cast show great poise and this film is filled with humour and sharp dialogue. Unfortunately the films been promoted as a blood-fest (watch the trailer) and those renting it are expecting the usual spilled guts and rapid action that appeals mostly to the attention deficit who need constant blood-letting. If this is you try Hobo With A Shotgun and leave this alone.- Was this review helpful to you?
