Marvellous!
By VickyM (16 reviews) from London , 18 Aug 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
Must be watched in Italian to get a real feel of the film. Rare but it is available. I watched this in Italian with English subtitles after waiting years to see it. Another masterpiece of a score from Ennio Morricone and the performance by Volonte is exceptional. Some of the sweeping camera shots are wonderful to watch and the whole start of a new decade of Italian cinema opens up before your eyes. The story is satirical and woven around the corrupt Italian police force and high powered officials of the day. You grasp a real sense of fear from the various characters you meet who 'The Doctor' (Volonte) challenges along the way. A wry and satirical look at the power and vileness of fascist power. Florinda Bolkan oozes beauty that only a few actresses from that era could (Claudia Cardinale, Edwige Fenech etc).
There are many great Italian films from this year (1970) but I have been waiting to see this one for so long that I felt compelled to write about it.- Was this review helpful to you?
