In THE INVISIBLE CIRCUS, sixties idealism meets headlong with family conflict and, mysteriously, death. This compelling drama, based on Jennifer Egan's novel, begins in the infamous Summer of '69, when radical hippie Faith O'Connor (Cameron Diaz), and her English boyfriend Wolf (Christopher Eccleston) take off for Europe, feeling that they will change the world for the positive. Faith diligently writes postcards to her younger sister Phoebe (Jordana Brewster). When they suddenly stop, the next Faith's family hears of her is that her body has been found at the bottom of a cliff outside a tiny Portuguese fishing village, the victim of an apparent suicide. Seven years later, Phoebe, a haunted, introverted teenager, still doesn't believe her adventurous, life-loving sister would have taken her own life so, against the wishes of her protective mother (Blythe Danner), Phoebe decides to retrace Faith's journey across Europe, using the postcards she had received from Faith as her only clues to a growing mystery. From a houseboat in Amsterdam to a flat in Paris, Phoebe follows Faith's footsteps right to the end. Along the way, she finds Wolf married and settled into a life of bourgeois complacency, one of the many twists in this chilling, engaging story.

Adapted from the novel by Jennifer Egan, this is a beautiful travelogue saddled with an inconsequential story. Taking teenage petulance to new levels of monotony, Jordana Brewster heads for Europe to discover why her adored sister, Cameron Diaz, committed suicide. Amsterdam, Paris and the Portuguese coastline look stunning, but the flashbacks to Diaz's transition from sixties hippy to seventies anarchist are totally unconvincing, as is Brewster's hesitant romance with her sister's old flame, Christopher Eccleston. Director Adam Brooks relies on dodgy fashions and bad wigs for period feel, without ever getting to the heart of its misguided radicalism or making us care about his characters.

A sort of quiet thoughtful film. Not a massive weepie. Sweet because it's about a young girl coming to terms with her hero-worshipping of her sister, discovering her own judgement and sexual confidence.
Great scenery includes fabulous Portuguese coastline and Paris; also Christopher Eccleston's intense blue eyes and nicely configurated rear view in the bathroom. Definitely a girls' movie.
This is a difficult film to review I think. It seemed to pass by without me noticing. Ie. Noting really spectacular happened, but it was OKish story line. I think it was one more for the girls, as my girlfriend liked it.
