on the one hand it's well acted and has some fantastic location shots and is faithful to the excellent HG wells story , but on the other perhaps some of the make up effects are unconvincing and a let down. perhaps it's too difficult to film; admittedly i haven't seen the other two versions - the 1996 version i've heard is bad and the 1933 version is unavailable but looks dodgy - so perhaps this is the best film version so far - so i've given it an extra star because it's a story worth investigating - perhaps fans of the mighty boosh would appreciate it too

I've been meaning to watch this film for years and I wasn't that disappointed with it really. It has obviously dated somewhat, but the acting is good and the production values are pretty high: some fight scenes between animals and humans are very realistic and you can see that real animals were actually used. What amazes me most though is that this story - by H. G. Wells - was written around 1897 and it is still relevant today, if not more-so. Man once again tries to play God by trying to improve on nature with disastrous consequences, as his creation turns against him. It maybe an old concept now but back then it was groundbreaking. Worth a watch.

Slow by today's standards, with some curious soft core and unfortunate men in masks; that said, York's transformation in the last half hour is well done and Lancaster plays it admirably straight. Shooting on location helps

  • Good for its time

This was made in the 1970s and so is a little dated for todays viewers. That said, Lancaster and York are excellent in their roles and the whole thing has a sort of 'Lost' feel to it. The creatures look like they have been made up by the local junior school, but it was made over 30 years ago so it gets a break. The plot is interesting and a little unusual, and the gore is more in the mind that on screen, but the characters develop well with York as the estranged sailor plotting to escape. One to watch if youve never seen it, albeit dated visuals. I havent seen the 1990s remake but i can bet it wont be as good.

Is it the island or is it the drugs? Dr Moreau experiments on animals and humans to see if he can match Dr Frankenstein in his own way. Very watchable.

this movie feels very much like a high budget version of a hammer horror film, some of the acting is a little over the top but thats what you expect from a 70's horror of this type...

it feels like a tropic reworking of the classic Frankestein story...worth a watch
