Granada TV's dramatisation of Paul Scott's novels about the last days of the British Raj in India. In 'Crossing the River' Daphne Mannings arrives in India for the first time and meets Hari Kumar. 'The Bibighar Gardens' sees the controversy around Daphne and Hari's relationship escalate to a surprising degree. 'Questions of Loyalty' has Hari remaining in prison while Daphne gives birth. 'Incidents at a Wedding' finds Meyrick serving as best man at Teddy and Susan's wedding. 'Regimental Silver' sees Susan prepare to celebrate her 21st birthday. 'Ordeal by Fire' has Meyrick reveal the details of Teddy's death. 'Daughters of the Regiment' finds Sarah the centre of attention when she visits Aunt Fenny. In 'The Day of the Scorpion' Sarah meets the Count while travelling home. 'The Towers of Silence' sees Barbie fall ill after a visit to the home of Captain Cowley. 'An Evening at the Maharanee's' has Meyrick interrogate some suspected traitors. 'Travelling Companion' finds Sarah promoted to the rank of Sergeant. 'The Moghul Room' sees Peron investigate the secrets in Meyrick's past. 'Pandora's Box' has Susie struggle to regain her balance after Meyrick's accident. And finally, in 'The Division of the Spoils', the story of Meyrick's demise is recounted in full.

A jewel of a TV series

This is an excellent TV series set in India, it gives a real feeling for India at the time of the raj, and is peppered with stars and atmosphere. Throughly reccommend it.

Such a good film.

This was even better than I remembered. Watching it gave me the same feeling of embarrassment - the same sorrow that we, the British, could have been so arrogant - well, not all of us, but many. The ending is right - not happy, not sad - just realistic.

This is still a fantastic series with superb acting. It hasn't aged over the years at all. Wonderful atmospheric story capturing the last difficult years of the Raj. To be highly recommended.

They Don't Make Them Like This Anymore

A superb series. Has lost nothing in the years since its original showing. Magnificent acting. Watched the first 3 CDs and did not want to wait for the 4th so bought the boxed set. Having the 'additional features' is also very interesting hearing the actors and directors discussing the making of the series.

Cannot recommend it highly enough

The last disc was disappointing the story seamed to end abruptly and the storyline was taken up with the political situation and not the characters we had been following. It was extremely well acted.

excellent retro viewing. Very enjoyable but a bit dated in parts, however, like other 1970s and 1980s series I have re-watched, a breath of fresh air and good plot lines AND NO OBLIGATORY SWEARING! Joy!!!!
