A curate's egg
By a customer from Wales , 19 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Well, it?s always a delight to watch a wholly British thriller, with British cast, plot, and locations, but this film is a bit of a curate?s egg. Caine is worth watching, even although he?s not stretched in any way, and Olivier turns in one of his Thespian with a capital T performances, with more ham than a butcher?s shop. But he?s still a joy to watch, and it?s always good to see Charles Gray get screen time, although a young Robert Powell makes for rather a lightweight secret agent!
Trouble is, the cast has nothing really to get its teach into, with a plot that promises much, but becomes quickly obvious and still manages to be full of holes and continuity errors that speak perhaps of rushed editing and much left on a cutting room floor. It?s also not quite sure if it?s a straight spy story or ?caper movie?, and the atmosphere and tone veer between the two.
Worth watching on its own terms, it?s a mediocre film at best; but Hollywood can make a lot worse rubbish than this, and it?s a pleasant enough way to pass a wet Sunday afternoon.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not brilliant
By mavisdavies from Bristol , 19 Nov 2004A little poor considering the cast list.
An old school spy drama not to Caine's usual standard but still watchable.- Was this review helpful to you?

One to miss
By GetCarter from Liverpool , 02 Nov 2004I'm afraid that this is one Caine howler that has no redeeming characteristics whatsoever (unlike the bad but beautiful 'Return to the Poseidon Adventure', 'The Swarm' and countless others). When I saw the line up of Laurence Olivier, Michael Caine, Susan George and Robert Powell I rubbed my hands with glee before heading unreservedly for the 'Rent Now' icon. Alas, disappointment awaited.
Empty, flaccid, uninspired and unremarkable.- Was this review helpful to you?
