His finest performance on film
By diksluddies (9 reviews) from Stroud , 14 Nov 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
When I get asked to show people with little knowledge of Hendrix a film of him in action, Monterey is always the one that doesnt need any explanation. In 1967 he was fresh and enthusiastic and luckily his short set at Monterey was filmed sensibly in it's entirety although for some reason 'Can you see me' is missing and the stage lighting at the show was very poor.
Later performances that are often hailed as his 'best' such as Woodstock and Isle of Wight show a brilliant young man who had aged years on endless tours/drugs and 'had lost his way' and clearly could not live up to the freshness of his early shows such as this.
This film depicts what all the fuss was about and now repackaged with an intersting documentary before the set kicks off. Some familiar interviews from the vaults plus more recent footage from the likes of Mitch Mitchell and The Mamas and Papas. It is interesting to note that the audience seemed lacklustre and didnt really know what to make of this black guy playing rock and in such an unconventional way, the applause I feel was rather muted at the show and has been dubbed over with clips of a stunned audience clearly out of context with the actual song being played. That said this dvd does use different angles from earlier versions and in the bonus section one can view from different angles.
As an avid fan of Jimi it is always exciting to see footage that is 'new' and the BONUS part of this disc contains a REAL GEM, namely 2 tracks from The Experimces first tour in February 1967. It is incredible to see 2 small speakers for the p.a., unmiked drum kit and another stunned and sedate audience who had no idea that they were witnessing the reinvention of pop music into a serious artform. The camera captures the fashion of the day and clearly Chelmsford is still into wearing ties to gigs and mod haircuts abound, rather quaint. Oh for such innocent times to return!
So full marks to Experince Hendrix for putting together a great package for avids and newcomers alike.
Note. If you want to see the closest thing today to these early performances then go and see John Campbell perform with his band, 'ARE YOU EXPERIENCED'.- Was this review helpful to you?

Superb concert
By a customer from London , 21 Feb 2008It's about time this concert was available on DVD. Without doubt, one of Jimi's best performances that was captured on film. The Monterey festival was the first of its kind and the vibe and people seem more genuine than later rock concerts like Woodstock or Isle of Wight.
The Experience sound fresh, excited to be there. Mitch on drums gives a superb performance and Jimi is superb throughout - playing better rhythm and guitar than anybody before or since.
It's a shame that on this DVD they did not include the guy painting the Jimi mural to 'Can You See Me' like on the old VHS version. But, some of the bonus features on this DVD have probably never been released before. A real gem the b&w London footage.
Watch this and you will understand why Jimi took London by storm when he burst on the scene in late '66. This concert of June '67 was at the height of the Summer of Love and Jimi was at the peak of his powers as both a musician and a showman.- Was this review helpful to you?
