LOVEFiLM Review The Karate Kid

Jaden Smith stars as The Karate Kid in this epic remake where Kung Fu master Jackie Chan, disguised as the school janitor, teaches him how to fight off the school bullies.

I saw this film at the cinema this morning and all I can say is WOW!! The story is essentially the same as the original version although it has been updated. It was a tough act to follow the original but they definitely pulled it off. Jaden Smith really can act very well and Jackie Chan was fantastic. The imagery and setting of the movie was also stunning. It's been a long time since I've seen such a wonderful film. I couldn't recommend it highly enough!!

  • ULTIMATE true life jacket story

Will Smith's son's screen mum is annoying so she moves to China (NB: not Bel Air). Will Smith's son is unable to hang his jacket up, due to problems encountered on the playground, where an old man beats him at table tennis (i. e. started making trouble in his neighbourhood). After several montages, Will Smith's son is able to hang his jacket up. The old man is never seen again. Also Jackie Chan teaches him some Kung Fu and stuff.

  • Karate Kid 2010 can't touch the 80s classic Sorry!

Watched the 2010 remake on channel 4. I thought it was a good remake of a classic film. Jayden Smith was very considering he is a lot smaller than Daniel in the original In the 80's the original had a lot more training scenes etc. however having said that, I thought it was total genius idea to cast Jackie Chan as the Kung Fu master, which he is in his own right in my view. Those people who don't rate Smith and Chan's performances need to realise that the story could not be built upon as the orginial story did'nt offer much scope to do so, due to the cult status of 80s films which i was lucky enough to watch on TV when they came out eg karate kid films goonies

As a kid I saw the original Karate Kid and was kicking everything for some time. It's an '80s classic. The reboot just doesn't do it for me. Jackie Chan is not a wise choice as a replacement for Mr Miyagi. Chan was predominantly trained at a Chinese opera school doing acrobatics. I'm not being disrespectful when I say this, as it's a fact. His fighting style is all props and dare I say slapstick. The capable Donnie Yen or Jet Li would have been better choices as their screen presence/skill is formidable. The whole picking up a coat and hanging it on a hook is a poor substitute for the painting of the house skit from the original. It's also massively nauseating the level of nepotism, which gives Jaden Smith one creamy film choice after another just because his dad is Will Smith. This leaves a nasty taste in the mouth (guess what he's in a new film, again with his Dad). For a newer generation - who haven't seen the original - this may hold as much appeal as the original did for me.

Amazing film, although have never seen the original. Good acting, very easy to watch, classic moves. Fantastic, mid-week or weekend watch.
