I remember seeing this film years ago, and on going thru Trevor Howard's films thought I would recap. First and foremost Trevor Howard's performance is totally superb. He captures every nuance of his character and makes him extremely human. He steals the film completely. I thought the film was very well done. The battle scenes were very realistic and brought right to the forefront the plight and bravery of these seamen who were sent to rescue torpedoed ships. It really WAS a suicide mission. Something a lot of people are totally unaware of. I know I was. Sophia Loren and William Holden were also excellent. Though why Loren was chosen for this part I can't imagine. I realise it was one of her introductory roles. I found the ending unsatisfactory. It left one in limbo. But see it for Trevor Howard, it's worth it.
