Conceived in the aftermath of 9/11 by Steve Martin (yes, that one) and director Jeffrey Nachmanoff, Traitor proved too topical for comfort and took six years to get made... read more »
A very accurate depiction of the enemy we currenty face today in the west. Though most of you prefer to watch films which make us in the west the bad guys and depicts suicide bombers as 'freedom fighters' (Fahrenheit 9/11 maybe?), I prefer to watch films where we kick the asses of those who think they can come into our cities and blow themselves up for their superstitious beliefs. This is exactly what this film is, Jamie Foxx especially embraces his role as a Jihadi hunter. The film still touches upon the subjugation of women in the Arab world and makes a good attempt at helping us to understand the mind of the suicide bomber. Overall very enjoyable action flick with a bit of extra effort involved.
I was really looking forward to watching this film but found myself feeling frustrated with the acting and dialogue pretty much from start to end.
I was hoping to see an unbiased, enlightened view of the current situation in Saudi. Instead we get poor acting and a terribly jingoistic (almost imperialistic) script. The writers did allow a couple of local heroes, albeit heroes that were being patronised by the Yanks all the way through.
On a more positive note, the action sequences were well done and quite exciting and if the aim of the film was purely as an action movie then I wouldve perhaps been more generous with my review. This is the only reason I gave it any stars at all!!
Watch the film if you want to see some decent action but dont expect any depth to the story. Unmemorable.
Finally, just a comment on a previous review - this film is situated in Saudi Arabia not Iraq!! That is why the films called 'The Kingdom'. In case you hadnt noticed, Iraq is NOT a Kingdom. Nuff said, eh!!??
The US review for The Kingdom have been fascinating: of the 114 listed on Rotten Tomatoes as I write this, 58 are generally positive ('fresh') and 56 are negative ('rotten'). A lot of the highbrow press fall into the first category ( The New York Times; Village Voice; Time; Newsweek ), while many other critics have been quick to condemn the movie's supposedly reactionary, gung-ho politics. "A xenophobic, overblown, revenge-driven action thriller that exports the Rambo mentality to the Middle... Read more
