I have not yet seen the dvd version of this movie, and the last time I saw it was when it was first released (1977, when I was 20 years old and very much like the male lead character in the film - probably why it still means so much, especially as I have been secretly in love with Isabelle Huppert ever since). I still have vivid (memory, so possibly much altered) images of scenes from the film, associated with the emotions (I think) I experienced at the time. One of those poignant, emotionally gripping experiences that is hard to forget. Roll on the dvd release!

Remember watching this on TV 25 years ago in the days when TV did that kind of thing. I can recall many of the scenes - tender, heartbreaking, beautifully filmed and isabelle huppert is perfect. You have to sign up for this it will be one of the most affecting films you will see.

  • This is a film essentially about class barriers.....

    Rated - 5.0 stars

The story is simple enough; a quiet and undemonstrative young girl from a working class family meets an intellectual university student while on holiday by themselves at the seaside.

What makes the story so poignant and ultimately tragic is the fact that Pomme, the girl, cannot respond to Francois's intellectual pursuits. Her love for him is of the purest form, but his own friends/family think she is both socially & culturally beneath him.

    She ends up broken hearted.

There are some visually beautiful, fleeting images when the two are out together.

It's a lovely film, and I challenge anyone not to get a lump in the throat towards the end.
