Ladies Sing Jazz Vol 1
By herisson (5 reviews) from Cowick Lane, Exeter , 20 Jun 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
This disc is for jazz enthusiasts only, although some of these may feel, as I did, that hearing these voclists, without seeing them perform, is preferable. Looking at them can be a distraction. The exceptions to this are first Anita O'Day's two tracks which are hilarious, and, even more so, seeing Billie Holiday perform. The first few songs are a disappointment as the quality of sound and vision is really poor,. But when 'Fine and Mellow' is reached there are several minutes of unmissable and sheer joy. She performs with a group of some of the finest jazz masters of the swing era, who all play perfect solos. but there are shots of her listening to every note that they play with the most touching delight and appreciation. This one track makes the whole disc a must to see, even if the the whole DVD only merits 3 stars. It is the most affecting and beautiful experience I have ever had in the world of jazz, and I can watch it over and over again.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer from Epsom , 21 Nov 2008Just a concoction of very poor quality clips which should have stayed on the cutting room floor. Picture quality is bad and the sound - what sound?
I don't know why they bother putting this material out - it does not deserve a place in Lovefilm's listings....- Was this review helpful to you?
