inspiring story of Aung San Suu Kyi's amazing courage
By PoloBeanScotland (32 reviews) , 07 Jan 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Get your tissues - it's a real tear-jerker. The film is really well-done, amazing how Besson makes you feel as if you're there in Burma. Thewlis and Yeoh are just wonderful as Aris and Suu Kyi. I think Besson has done a great job in distilling the complexities of the recent history of Burma into an engaging and gripping film. He has resisted the temptation to dwell on the psychological pressure of Suu Kyi's lengthy house arrest and instead focuses on her relationships with ordinary Burmese people, with the activists of the National League for Democracy and with her family, and of course the generals. This is a quality production with many moving moments which depicts faithfully the inspiring story of Aung San Suu Kyi's amazing courage. If anything, it seems a shame the story does not follow events right up to the present day, as there is still so much going on, but perhaps there will be a sequel...?- Was this review helpful to you?

(50)Real Shame
By buffyrules (335 reviews) from southend on sea , 30 Apr 2013Despite the amazing story and epic struggle this film failed badly to interest. Something was very wrong here. The actors have proved themselves before, particularly Thewlis but all looked like they just turned up and read their lines. Who knows why this was the case but there was a distinct lack of feeling between the two leads and no chemistry at all.- Was this review helpful to you?

A terrible, painful dilema !!! True story from a great Director
By fanbiche (5 reviews) from Southampton , 13 Feb 2013A good & quite realistic depiction of the life of a great lady and the suffering she had to endure as she devoted her life to her troubled countrymen , and the support she received from her extraordinary husband. Very, very infuriating and sad !!- Was this review helpful to you?

Film for thought
By AmesM (2 reviews) , 01 Feb 2013This film was an interesting insight into the life and relationships of Aung San Suu Kyi and her family. It is both a touching love story and a moving political journey of a very brave right on woman, who stood up for the rights of others in spite of the massive personal sacrifices this required. well worth a watch.- Was this review helpful to you?
