    [Highly rated reviewer]

At the time of Mathew Shepards death I saw the odd news clip regarding the matter, but really didn't pay much attention to the incident.

This film (documentary) takes witness statements regarding what happened leading up to his death and after, while looking at the character which was Matt, as well as the place he lived.

This is a very moving film which show the deprevity some "yokles" will go to when something different is in their environment.

    Well worth a watch.

  • An Ugly Facette of the US and a Fantastic Film around it

It is a docu-movie about the murder of Matthew Shepard back in October 1998.

I experienced the case when I was in the US in 1998, and last year I finally drove through Laramie en route to Yellowstone Park. And blimey, what a dull town it was.

Having seen the town personally and knowing about the outcry which went through the US back in the days, I must say the film portraits this very well.

I found the film absolutely amazing and touching. It shows how messed up the US as a country actually is. For us Europeans the US is always New York, San Francisco or Disneyland, but actually, Laramie is the US, too, and probably an even more accurate view of it.

    Well done!

  • The So-Called "Good Ol' U.S of A" !!!

'The Laramie Project' is more of a documentary, than a film.

It is very well made and put together, rather like a newsreel.

'The Laramie Project' says a lot about the so-called 'Good Ol' U. S of A' and all of its Religious hang-ups, phobias and lack of education.

A very sad and very moving account, of what Religion and its man-made, ignorant Laws, can do to a society, all in the name of God !!!

  • If You Don't Cry - You Have No Soul

    Rated - 4.0 stars

The first thing to mention about this film is it;s not a biopic or biography of Matthew Shepard's life, not is it a drama based on the events of the horrific crime that took his life. It's not an expose or insight in to the minds of the killers and why they did it, nope, this is a moving, tender, hurtful film of the reaction that Matt's beating and death had on the town of Laramie, spoken in the actual words of those real residence.

It's heart wrenching, touching, with gritty realism and honesty it is, as you hear views, beliefs and statements from those really there.

Yes there are some 'dramatic' moments, and rather than being completely one sided, as it so easily could have been, it's not, it includes hateful people with view that easily disgust, but, this gives the true picture of what really happened.

It's also so very scary that crimes like this haven't died along with Matthew. No, gay people are still being abused, beaten and killed just for being gay - nothing more and nothing less.

You really should rent this film and if you do, make sure you have some tissues handy, for you'll have more than a couple of tears before the end!

The only film that has made me cry more has been Schindler's List. This film isn't 'gay propaganda' and even religious characters get a balanced and fair representation. The documentary style reinforces the 'true story' aspect and it is perhaps this that most makes it so moving and thought provoking.

although such a tragic event is always moving this failed as it was just the reaction. more effective would have been a biography
