The Last Broadcast

A trio of people with a cable access TV show venture into the wilds of New Jersey to make a documentary about a search for the legendary Jersey Devil. Days later, only one of them returns- and he quickly becomes a suspect in the murder of the other. Only when the footage they shot is found is the horrifying truth revealed. A controversy regarding the similarities between this film and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT emerged upon the release of the latter in the summer of 1999. THE LAST BROADCAST was actually made first.

A documentary crew disappears after going into the woods to make a film about a local legend, but there is video footage of their ordeal. Sounds familiar? This shoestring documentary-style horror movie was actually made before The Blair Witch Project, though it didn't manage to have the same impact. That's not to say it's an inferior film; in fact, the only thing that lets this entertaining movie down is its weak ending. More formally structured than Blair Witch, The Last Broadcast is about as scary (in other words, not very), and offers further proof of how easy it is for film-makers to manipulate fiction into a convincing form of “fact”.

Clever, inventive low-budget horror that predates The Blair Witch Project (qv), with which it has some similarities.

    Not Bad

If you enjoyed Blair Witch you'll like this. Good film and worth a watch. One of those hidden goodies of a horror film.

    No Blair Witch

Not a bad film but no nightmares here, whereas Blair Witch, that so many compare it to, I found to be terrifying. I haven't been able to watch the Blair Witch since it left me scarred for months upon my first viewing. However before you join the argument between which came first and who stole what idea, be sure to check out Cannibal Holocaust that had the technique on lock, long before either of these films. But The Last Broadcast isn't a bad attempt at a documentary style horror and is worthy of attention.
