Kind Hearts & Coronets; heir to a noble family Alec Guiness [Lavender Hill Mob, The] is forced to accept a menial-job when his mother’s family refuse to accept his existence. Rejected by childhood-sweetheart Joan Greenwood [Young Wives Tale] Alec plots revenge on those who ruined his life & disowned his mother who married for love…

Man In The White Suit; scientist Alec Guiness [Kind Hearts & Coronets] moves from one mill to another exploiting their facilities in his quest to produce a synthetic fibre that ‘never gets dirty & never wears out’. Alec’s R&D rattles-up thousands of pounds, a considerable sum at the time, in ‘sundries’; hushed-up lest shareholders discover the truth. Deemed ‘insane’ by his previous employers he convinces mill owners Cecil Parker [Man Could Get Killed, A] daughter Joan Greenwood [Whisky Galore] not to report him to her father. Having created his miracle-fibre rival mill-owners, commodity-dealers & workers…

This film was a pleasant surprise to find. A witty and clever black comedy with a memorable and engaging plot.

Guiness and cast bang on form in this comedy that zips along.

Know Gibralter quite well so was interesting to see it in the 1950's and the how the Brits lived there (fire in the hearth going all the time and playing at keeping Jonny Foreigner out).

Film worth it alone to see stiff upper lip Celia Johnson let her hair down and do a rumba/jive/salsa number and also Guiness do a flamenco number with a young and Rubenesque de Carlo!

Absolute classic in so many ways-brilliant acting not just from Guinness and an excellent insight into the history of the U.K. and its numerous foibles and rituals. Paved the way for so many including Peter Sellers.

Along with the Titfield Thunderbolt this is unquestionably the joint best of the Ealing comedies. It has the best script of them all and obviously the plot is delicious. It, rather unusually, kept all of my children happy and enthralled throughout. Finally, it has some of the best screen performances of British talent in cinema history. The definitive Ealing comedy, if you only see one see this one.

Films like this are rare. a gentle yet fast paced black comedy. Charming and funny. I watched this film when i was a very young kid and after re-visiting it 15 years later it still has the same magic!
