It was supposed to be a wild adventure in a far-off country, but when a naive young doctor arrives in 1970's Uganda - hoping for fun, sun and to lend a helping hand - he finds himself instead on a shocking ride into the darkest realm on earth. Befriended by the charismatic new leader, Idi Amin, and appointed as his personal physician, Nicholas Garrigan is originally blinded by his larger than life and charming persona. But when the terrible truth of his despotic rule is revealed, he must fight for both his life and soul against one of the cruellest leaders in history.
Deftly mixing fact and fiction and startlingly resonant with today's world, the film features a tour de force performance from Forest Whitaker as Amin and carves two unforgettable portraits: one of a charismatic but psychopathic ruler who ravaged his country and the other, of a witness to history who finally finds the courage to make a stand.

Though this was hardly the worst film I have seen this year it was somewhat of an anticlimax. I can only assume that the masses have once more followed like sheep instead of using their own minds.
This story is 'based on' factual events. The great disclaimer.
First off, Idi Amin didn't have a Scottish doctor. He was mental though.
Also, the film starts with James McAvoy getting fresh with Gillian Anderson and then the whole James/Gillian thing seems to be forgotten for the rest of the film. Seems a bit pointless, really.
Forrest Whittaker won an Oscar for this, and righfully so: he's got the Central African accent down pat and makes a pretty convincing mental-case.
I was delighted with the film (4+ stars, easy), then disappointed once I did a bit of Wikipedia searching to find that it was mostly fiction (hence the removal of a star).
When they make a film of my life, I hope they put the 'based on factual events' bit at the start and then write a film about me being married to Cindy Crawford and being a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. Neither of which are true, of course, but I am married to a girl and I do have a job and give 20 quid a month to Unicef.
Tobey Maguire is baffled by reports he's set to play the lead role in upcoming movie The Hobbit - because he hasn't been approached to discuss the part. The Spider-Man star has become the latest Hollywood actor linked to the casting of Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings prequel. Maguire was confused when he spotted online reports about his role in the film, and has dismissed the claims as "just not true." He tells Access Hollywood, "I have not met or spoken to (director) Guillermo del Toro Read more
