Lance Guest's prowess at video games is monitored by emissaries from the Star League of the future, who recruit him to defend the universe from evil invaders in this glossy, space-age fairy tale. It's highly derivative — Star Trek-like aliens have Star Wars-inspired dog-fights against a computer-graphic backdrop — but the sensitive love story between Guest and Catherine Mary Stewart cuts through the cuteness and gives the intergalactic adventures a major boost. Children will love it, especially the fun moments with Guest's android double.

A surprisingly pleasant variation on the Star Wars boom, with sharp and witty performances from two reliable character actors and some elegant gadgetry to offset the teenage mooning.

    Classic!

Oh, don't get me wrong, it is by no means perfect. But as a fantasy film that I grew up with I still unashamedly love it.

It has some cheesy moments but thankfully these are more than compensated for by the likeable characters, amusing moments and a quick script. Even the special effects are still pretty smart - this being one of the earliest and most ambition computer driven special films.

As a kid it has everything you dream about, as an adult it reminds you of just how fun it used to be when you imagination 'played out'.

A film by Michel Gondry which is still in the post-production stage has been given an early review by writers for movie gossip website Ain't It Cool News. Gondry, who directed the mind-boggling classic Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and hilarious music documentary Dave Chappelle's Block Party, is currently completing Be Kind Rewind, starring Mos Def and Jack Black. The film tells the story of Jerry, whose brain becomes magnetised and erases all the videotapes in a rental store, forcing... Read more
