Christopher Plummer and Helen Mirren play Mr & Mrs in this story about Leo Tolstoy's life.

I saw a preview of this film about a year and a half ago. 300 people watched it and nobody had a good word to say about it. The story is dreary, one feels nothing for any of the characters and the acting is risible. Christopher Plummer spends all his time chewing the scenery and playing to the back of the stalls in a performance that deserves the 'Ham Award of the Year'. One wonders what Mirren was thinking of when she agreed to be in this - perhaps the gas bill was due. She looks really uncomfortable and, if the film wasn't ostensibly a weepie, you might think you were watching a very badly acted comedy.

  • An intelligent, touching and remarkable story

So gorgeous, so lyrical that I will watch it through several times more. A cast to die for, understated, poetic, whimsical, charming and full of life, meaning and relevance. An intelligent script, gently directed with an ensemble of some of the best actors - who clearly read a script they were keen to do.

Definitely worth a look,an interesting period in Russian history and into Tolstoi and his philosophy. The acting is very good,

As historical dramas go this isn't bad, it's not the most riveting film you will see, and the subject matter is a tad obscure for the general viewer but Christopher Plummer is always worth watching, and Helen Mirren is very good. Overall, worth a look.

Very good acting, very good photography, and very well paced. The costumes and the setting – the house, the garden and the Tolstoy estate – beautifully reflect the period.

Achingly beautiful. A painful subject captured wonderfully, a bit slow going but I think it's pace made it work quite well.

Glad to know a bit more about Tolstoy, maybe I'll read War and Peace now...
