THOUGHT PROVOKING

There are two ways of looking at this film. The first is to snap 'This is not from the gospels, some things are added and some deleted, this is blasphemy' and to go and watch The Passion Of The Christ instead. The second way which I have preferred is to look at it from an objective perspective. Because when this is done the viewer sees that the essence of the holy scriptures is all there. When people do not like the bible to be altered in anyway because they feel it is sacred i can have no objections, but this film merely looks upon Jesus from a human perspective. After all Jesus was born a human and must have had human emotions from time to time - this film simply portrays that but also shows the sacrifice Jesus was willing to make, the love he tried to spread, the price he had to pay - exactly how it is said in the bible. Some viewers may have been uncomfortable with the `love scene` he had with Mary Magdelene at the end of the film. The fact is that this was the devils last temptation, the `love scene` never truely occured and Jesus was NOT tempted. I would also like to say that although I gave Mel Gibsons movie a five-star rating - I believe that his film should be considered more blasphemous. In this film the focus is not just on blood, guts and horror but on Jesus's teachings and moral struggle, his early life. I felt that Mel Gibson's film overdid the violence (though it showed the pain Jesus went through it was over-the-top). Perhaps this controversial film is a more accurate betrayal of Jesus' last days, who knows? All in all I feel that people should look for the deeper meanings rather than concentrate on little details, Jesus died for peoples sins - not for people to argue about the quotes he made before hand or how much blood poured from his body when he was lashed.- Was this review helpful to you?

Merry Christmas

I spent most of the film thinking 'yes, I can see why this offended some people, it's pretty blasphemous.' Then at the end I changed my mind and thought 'no, this shouldn't be offensive.' It's certainly a thoughtful and thought-provoking film. One surprise; David Bowie can act, ok not a terribly demanding role, but a pretty convincing portrayal of a patrician Brit. One aspect of this I found rather distracting. Why did Harvey Keitel's hair have to be dyed ginger? The colour doesn't match his skin tone and frankly looks ridiculous. Or is this simply because I have ginger hair and don't appreciate being associated with Judas? Next time we complain about other religions taking offence too quickly, we should look back and remember the over-reaction of some Christians to this film.- Was this review helpful to you?

He was human after all...
By Heksie (5 reviews) from London , 23 Nov 2011Wow! The only reason I wanted to watch this epic was the controversy it caused when it was made. I must say the only thing I found disappointing was the lack of blasphemic content. All the hype surrounding this film lead me to believe it was a tool of satan himself and was almost lookinf forward to a certain level of outrage at disrespect being shown to a religious figure whom is pivotal to many peoples' existence.
In the next breath I was so glad to have experienced such a wonderful interpretation of a well rehearsed story. It is beautifully shot with captivating landscapes, the perfomances of Willem Defoe and Harvey Keitel are absorbing. Defoe's portrayal is complicated, flawed and honest. The most believable interpretation of Jesus I've seen.
Wonderful surprise to encounter David Bowie as a charming, however over-thought and wooden Pontius Pilate. Barbara Hershey gives Mary Magdalene a powerfully enigmatic yet beautifully vulnerable energy who's presence lingers. The soundtrack is fantastic as well, Peter Gabriel did a wonderful job, however 80's his 'world music' comes across - it works for me.
I would recommend this film to anyone who is not afraid to be challenged, and who doesn't view life in absolutes. The perspective is important to talk about even if it's something one does not subscribe to.- Was this review helpful to you?

Risky Effort

He really put his neck on the line as he entered unknown territory. At times his minimalist approach that he had at that point been famous for let the film down. A refreshing insight but rather self-indulgent

Whether you approve or not is irrelevant, any movie which can do this has certainly achieved something. Personally I can live with the artistic licence - it's a film after all - but the character depth is a little overpowering and at times unnecessarily so. The cinematography is excellent and storyline is challenging but ultimately the film takes itself rather too seriously and as such is overlong and dwells on the characters' various internal turmoils more than it needs to.- Was this review helpful to you?
