An artful glimpse into the early life of Beat Generation figure Neal Cassady, a restless spirit who provided friendship and inspiration to cultural icons Jack Kerouac and Ken Kesey. Thomas Jane captures Cassady's cool edginess and his sharp, self-aware narration adds much spirit to the rather laid-back, low-key story. There's some well-drawn relationships with girlfriends Claire Forlani and Gretchen Mol, although the film's sticking point is the miscasting of Keanu Reeves, who is unconvincing as his persuasive, doggedly irresponsible best friend. That said, director Stephen Kay's evocative, dimly-lit ambience and the jazzy soundtrack gives the film a stylish, subdued vibe.

    • Radio Times
  • Meandering tale of minimal interest, totally dependent on an audience's knowledge that Cassady was said to be the inspiration behind Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road.
