In what just might be the finest rock & roll concert film ever, THE LAST WALTZ celebrates the final performance by the Band (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm, and Garth Hudson). The show took place on Thanksgiving Day in 1976, at San Francisco's Winterland Arena--where the group had played their very first show more than 16 years before. In order to make their farewell even more unforgettable, they recruited numerous guests to join them onstage. They include Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, Neil Young, Ringo Starr, Paul Butterfield, Ronnie Hawkins, and the Staples. Martin Scorsese, a former roommate of Robbie Robertson's, employs some of the world's greatest cinematographers--including Michael Chapman, Vilmos Zsigmond, and Laszlo Kovacs--to film the set in a way that captures the show's sweat and energy with a powerful intimacy. Interspersed into the songs are a series of interviews with the Band's members, who recall their early days playing for empty bars and their emergence as major players in the rock & roll game. THE LAST WALTZ is a thrilling concert film, mandatory viewing even for those unfamiliar with the Band or rock music in general.

Having been one of the supervising editors of the remarkable rockumentary Woodstock, Martin Scorsese was the perfect choice of director for this stunning movie of the Band's farewell gig on Thanksgiving Day 1976. Taking a break from shooting New York, New York, he nevertheless planned this film to the last detail during rehearsals and was well served by seven cameramen, including Michael Chapman, Vilmos Zsigmond and Laszlo Kovacs, whose pinpoint shots allow you to concentrate on the performances and the brilliant music. The guests are a who's who of electric folk and R&B, making this not only an unmissable slice of nostalgia, but also a masterpiece of pop cinema.
Perhaps the best movie so far of a rock concert, one that also features many of the most influential performers of the era, together with some brief but revealing interviews with the band members.
A group I've never heard of, and a load of gereatric rock stars singing the least known songs ever, intermixed with laddish self indulgent waffle. Did not enjoy at all.
In this fantastic Rockumentary, Martin Scorsese proves he is not all about violence and contraversy.
The last waltz is a film documenting the last ever gig of 'The Band' performed at Winterland San Fransisco. It is almost hard to believe the line-up of rock superstars who help to say farewell in style to one of Americas biggest, and most influencial bands. Martin scorsese carrys the audience along with a nice momentum cutting between live footage, interviews and rehersals. There is never a dull moment. So if you are a fan of scorsese, the band or neither I'm sure you will enjoy this movie.
There were legends aplenty in Berlin last night as Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese's Shine A Light, a new documentary following the all-conquering Rolling Stones, opened the city's 58th film festival. Scorsese, arguably one of cinema's greatest-ever directors with credits including Goodfellas, The Gangs of New York and Raging Bull, was joined on the red carpet by surviving Stones Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood. Shine A Light follows the Stones' 2006 concert at... Read more
