Delightfully handled comedy adventure, from the days (alas) when crime did not pay; a lighter ending would have made it a classic.
A terrific caper movie, adapted by Bryan Forbes from a novel by John Boland. Hawkins is at his gruff best as an... read more on Time Out
Don't be fooled by the title, this is as far removed from the stomach churning antics of the TV series as it is possible to be.
I watched this film whilst wrapping what seemed like hundreds of Christmas presents the night before Xmas Eve. It made the whole time consuming effort seem worth it - the film is wonderfully acted (as things had to be prior to high budget special effects) and leaves you with a real 'feel good' feeling. I'd highly recommend this early 'Oceans Eleven' style romp to anyone...

Great cast, great plot, highly enjoyable. If you are sick of modern Hollywood, go for this one, you won't regret it.
Also recommended for lending it's title to the wonderful BBC series.
A great Black and White movie. Simple, well acted and the suspense as well as the action is constant. Slighly dated when compared to modern slick colour action, but not to be missed.
League of Gentlemen - BBC Version, Not to be confused with that terrible BBC comedy (if you can call it comedy) show of the same name. An all star cast perform in this film, the great Jack Hawkins takes top billing alongside Roger Livesey, Richard Attenborough, Bryan Forbes, Nigel Patrick among other well known stars. Hawkins is at his gruff best as an embittered ex-army colonel who assembles a seven-man team of similarly disgruntled former military men to execute a million pound bank robbery. Plotting and direction are as rigorously organised as the operation itself, making this a crisply enjoyable picture with typically excellent character playing from a lovable set of old lags.

Great to see the old actor's the plot well is a bit simple really. For the year it was made was truely great thought. was it really like that in the 60's!
ENTERTAINING,A GOOD SCRIPT,JACK HAWKINS AT HIS BEST,ALL IN THE STYLE OF THE EALING FILMS.
How can anyone resist a film with this cast: Jack Hawkins, Nigel Patrick, Terence Alexander, Bryan Forbes, and more? There are more stiff lips here than on Scott's trip to the South Pole.
Simple plot, simply executed, but in an England that is now simply a memory. And London traffic without a congestion charge! Oh yes, AA patrol men (remember them?) who actually salute!
While busy playing spot the supporting actor - a gay Oliver Reed is a gem - you can marvel at Nanette Newman in the bath.
Wonderful. Unmissable.
The only drawback? My daughter (14) mistook it for 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' - her loss, not mine.
A most enjoyable film. Light entertainment showing some unpleasant ex Army persons welded together by greed but learning to respect each other for their qualities
