THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE, based on the book of the same title by Steve Pressfield, uses golf as the basis for this spiritual tale of friendship, self-discovery, and faith. His incredible prowess at the game of golf makes young Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon) the pride of Savannah, Georgia in 1916. When Junuh enlists and is sent overseas to fight in World War I, the reality of war proves too much for him. Rather than return to Savannah a broken man, he simply disappears, much to the dismay of his girlfriend, feisty socialite Adele Invergordon (Charlize Theron). When Junuh finally does return to Savannah in 1931, he is coerced into representing his hometown in a golf tournament against legends Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. But Junuh has lost his swing, and only begins to find it again with the help of Bagger Vance (Will Smith), a mysterious drifter who appears out of the night and offers his services as a caddy. Ultimately, Vance is a spiritual force, teaching Junuh not only about the game, but also about life in this beautifully filmed work directed by Robert Redford (ORDINARY PEOPLE, THE HORSE WHISPERER). Jack Lemmon narrates and makes a brief appearance in the film.

Will Smith transcends his blockbuster image with a performance of real tenderness and integrity as a golfing guru in director Robert Redford's 1930s-set drama. With her late father's resort facing ruin, Adele (Charlize Theron) launches a big-name golf tournament in Savannah. Lining up against golfing legends Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen is local boy Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon), an emotionally scarred First World War veteran. Rannulph has taken to the bottle, and is struggling to regain control of his swing and his life, until caddy Bagger Vance (Smith) provides the healing touch. Tiger Woods might take issue with the idea that Golf is a game that can't be won, only played, but in the context of this old-fashioned tale of love and redemption it rings true.
Golf is treated as a viable substitute for religion in this insufferably mystic and torpid movie, which is given to nostalgia for a past that never was; it also reduces dialogue to an exchange of sentimental banalities.
Well at first I thought, Golf film what have I let my self in for.. Well that shows me how much I know I found the film to have a great storyline and some fantastic acting. a must see a film for all the family
The Legend of Bagger Vance is a golf movie - although it isn't really about golf.
Dressed up in the three way competition between the top two golfers in America and the local ex-hero, and taking place shortly after the first world war - this movie has a lot of themes going at the same time: the love of a woman (Charlise Theron looking more delicious than ever as a capricious Mint Julep) for a man wrecked and ruined by the carnage of World War I (Matt Damon looking a little uncomfortable in the role), and his redemption through the game of golf with the help of a spiritual guide (Will Smith loving the role, and almost hamming it up TOO much).
Whatever the faults of this movie, they disappear behind the backdrop of the story that Hollywood always does best - the little man making good. This is a good one to share with the family.
"Boring, complacent and criminally lucky to have got away with everything so far." That was David Thomson's scathing verdict on Ben Affleck in his "Biographical Dictionary of Film" in 2004. It was Ben's "annus horribilis": the year that his planned wedding to J-Lo fell apart. The year that saw him bounce back from the mortifying Gigli debacle with two more back-to-back duds: Surviving Christmas and Jersey Girl. He was considered such box-office poison his cameo in Elektra wound up on the... Read more
