Chose this film because Matt Damon was in it. Big mistake! American sentimentality at its worst I am afraid. Watched it to the bitter end but no surprises there.

Okay so I like Will Smith and Matt Damon but this film didn't work for me. Probably watch it again if it came on TV but otherwise would not give it a second airing. Too long and by the end I couldn't care less about any of the characters.

The two critics reviews seem unbelievably harsh. This film is telling a fictional story. It is not a documentary about the Deep South. To that end, it's a predictable, but upifting story, about the triumph of the human spirit over perceived odds. Matt Damon plays his role superbly, as a man who is not just stuck in the golf tournament, but in the game of life, and the only way he can move forewards with either, is to try to go beyond himself and his own ego. Will Smith does not play an Uncle Tom in anyway shape or form, and while the racial segregation of the time is invisible, this is not a story about that or where it has any relevance on what takes place. At no point is golf a substitute for religion, either although it is used as a metaphor. Really - some of these critics are downright lazy in their analysis. Please don't let their cynicism put you off from seeing this film. This is a truly feel-good story, and why not?

many reviewers concetrate on how good Will Smiths performance is in this movie and seem to ignore the performance given by Matt Damon as the troubled central character,

a man who's soul has been deeply wounded by the horrors of the first world war and has given up on life, he is given a second chance and Damon plays the role to perfection.

Two actors in top form take you through an emotional roller coaster as our main character follows a difficult path to redemption, with golf as the backround canvas to a feel good triumph.

I've never had any interest in golf so I think I must have been looking for yet another opportunity to see Will Smith in action when I rented this film. What an utter delight - beautifully acted and a really touching story. I felt moved by it and even my hard as nails partner went very quiet (bliss!). An absolute pleasure. This is definitely a film for my 'Want to watch again one day' list.
