Pretentious?
By a customer from England , 15 Aug 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
I love Carax's Lovers of the Ninth Bridge, but I found this, his first film, boring, obscure and more than a little pretentious (eg what was the point of cutting to black in the middle of some scenes for a few seconds?). It does, however, show some flair, but I ended up fast forwarding it 20 minutes from the end!- Was this review helpful to you?

(9)typical foreign film
By a customer from nottingham, England , 15 Nov 2009it began slowly & then it got itself confused and then after another 30mins of more complication, it got better; and just as it got better, it lost the plot & the characters intensified & nothing made sense - that is, unless you are French. However, an enjoyable film to watch.- Was this review helpful to you?

But life's too short
By chenny (70 reviews) from Bristol , 24 Jun 2009Recently I rented 'Tokyo' a triptych of short films all centered around the odder side of life in the eponymous city. The strongest of the three films was Leox Carax's Mr Merde.
On the back of that I clicked on his name and randomly selected another of his films.
This film was not as good as his later offering, Where Mr Merde is engaging and quirky, this is more forced in its avant garde pretentions. It's camera work is close and stifling and its cause esoteric and uncooperative.
Now all of these qualities maybe to your taste, and I might be a little slack jawed, but as i am the only one who has so far bothered to review this film, it automatically makes me right.
So there.- Was this review helpful to you?

Avoid this pretentious tosh
By Tambourineman (1 review) from Brighton , 08 Jun 2009I rented Pola X to hear the music of the wonderful Scott Walker, who provides the score; nothing more of his understanding of humanity and depth of feeling is evident here. Paper-thin characters make ludicrously unrealistic decisions in a film believing itself to be high art - don't be fooled, it has nothing to say about anything. Actual sex is employed purely for shock value and exposes the shallow, adolescent motives of the director. Probably the worst film I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot. Avoid.- Was this review helpful to you?

art meets boredom
By flores (4 reviews) from London , 30 Apr 2009This film is a very much art house fan only film, it was hard for me to watch, well, I have started badly.
The start of the film is interesting, I was liking the film, I felt it was going to completely change pace and the emotions in the film would change, but alas, it was not to be.
There are some great scenes, but overall its not an easy watch, well, who said we should want an easy watch, its just when it comes to the end of the film, i like some closure, but this film just fell apart on me, I did not take much from it other than some interesting ideas.
He is a good filmmaker in some ways, but in others he misses, I suppose one reason is that he makes the films that he wants to make, in the way he wants to make them, just like a lof of people, but maybe a lot of people think about what the audience will take away with them.
If you are into slow sad french art films, then have a look.- Was this review helpful to you?
