The makers of this biopic have set themselves an enormous challenge in fashioning a dramatic feature about one of British cinema's most familiar figures. Many of his movies are classics, readily available for comparison with the attempts to re-create them here; many of the supporting characters are celebrities, who are still very much alive. That the picture is so engaging owes much to an Oscar-worthy performance by Geoffrey Rush, who plays Peter Sellers as a volatile and selfish man struggling for a personality beyond his comic creations. The film begins with Sellers already at the height of his radio success with The Goons, and it concentrates on his relationship with put-upon first wife Anne (Emily Watson) and his stormy second marriage to Britt Ekland (Charlize Theron). Essentially it's an old-fashioned, overstuffed (though his two later marriages are jettisoned) biography, however the production benefits from inspired touches — such as having Rush as Sellers impersonate other characters when they offer an opinion on the man.

A biopic of Peter Sellers that provides an opportunity for a bravura performance from Geoffrey Rush that emphasizes Sellers' unpleasant personal behaviour; the narrative complexities would have been better served by a less hectic directorial approach.

    The man behind the mask

Peter Sellers died at the age of 54, he made more than 70 films, had 4 wives, 3 children, was internationaly famous and very weathly. But as this film shows he was not a happy man.

The film covers the period when Sellers has the first taste of success as part of the Goons in the 50's to his death in 1980.

Geoffrey Rush is brilliant as are the rest of the cast. The whole film is very evocative of the period and the director keeps the film moving along at a good pace, even using Rush's ability to play Seller's chameleon like talents as other members of the cast.

Sellers does not come across as being either a good father or husband, but he did have an immense talent.

In the end you don't really get any closer to understanding the tradigy of Sellers, but then I don't think he did either.

Wallace and Gromit picked by Hollywood producers

    • 23 Jan 2006

Nick Park's Wallace & Gromit - The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit has been named best animated feature. At the Producers Guild Awards Wallace and Gromit's big screen debut, which featured the voices of Peter Sallis, Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter, beat off Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Robots, Madagascar and Chicken Little. In the best film category Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain continued its great haul of awards by taking the title. This bodes well for the film starring Heath Ledger and Jake Read more
