Writer-director Wes Anderson is an absurdist. His films (four so far: Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and now The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) exist in... read more »
As you might expect from Wes Anderson, this film is a weird, whimsical offering which doesn't fit into any categories. It veers between farce, tragedy and satire on reality TV.
One of the oddest things is the musical soundtrack, featuring folk-style versions of David Bowie songs translated into Portuguese.
Bill Murray plays another man in a mid-life crisis - the captain of a rusting submarine. Zissou is a washed-up film-maker who has devoted his life to studying marine life, but now wants to destroy a piece of it - by killing the mysterious jaguar shark which killed his friend.
Owen Wilson plays Steve's long-lost son, Ned, with Cate Blanchett as a haughty journalist boasting an impossibly posh accent.
The whole movie is visually stunning and unlike anything else you've ever seen - I enjoyed it, but can see it's a film which won't be to everyone's taste.
Some have said that this film is poor compared to other Anderson films, however I believe this to be his most mature and accomplished film yet.
In contrast to eariler Wes Anderson films there is a emphasis on one character with the other supporting characters not as well drawn. This might have been a problem had Bill Murray not been playing Steve Zissou, Jacque Cousteau in all but name. Playing his usual world weary, middle aged man, Murray impresses with a performance of such depth that an otherwise unlikeable character becomes a heartwarming father figure gone wrong. The only problem is that his performance is so good it unsettles the whole film, despite brillant comedic turns from Willem Defoe and Jeff Goldblum.
The soundtrack is classic Anderson and I feel its one of the best yet, containing Bowie sung in portuguese by Seu Jorge, classic tracks and of course Mark Mothersbaugh's synth orchestrations (Containing brass for the first time!).
Dont listen to the detracters this is a classic Anderson film and a good place for newcomers to start.
3rd Rock From The Sun and 10 Things I Hate About You star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is to turn on the charms for Elf and Almost Famous star Zooey Dechanel in a new offbeat romantic comedy, 500 Days Of Summer, it has been revealed. Showbiz newspaper Variety reports that the pair will headline the non-rom-com, with Gordon-Levitt playing a man who falls head-over-heels in love with Dechanel's character, who unfortunately for him does not believe in all that mumbo-jumbo. They will be joined by a cast... Read more
