Some movies are just so awful you wonder how they could have been conceived in the first place. This overlong Panavisioned adaptation of a Jules Verne novel about a lighthouse that is beset by pirates is pathetic, geared for neither adults nor children, and has grievous trouble finding both style and tone. Producer/star Kirk Douglas, villain Yul Brynner and female lead Samantha Eggar look uncomfortable, director Kevin Billington seems out of his depth, and the dubbing of the foreign supporting players rings awkwardly in the ears.

  • Pretentious, disaster-prone version of a simple adventure story; one wonders not so much what went wrong as whether anything went right in this international venture.

Not as much light as I thought

I first watched this film on the TV quite a few years ago; so my recollection was vaguely of a violent, horrific film, where only the hero ends up alive. This is true, but I'd forgotten how slow and ponderous it was too. There's not much dialogue, the music is inappropriate, the female role totally unnecessary and the pace between the scenes rather abrupt. Having said all that,I still enjoyed the film and the unusual setting; namely the lighthouse and scenery.
