This had such a downbeat and tedious beginning I just gave up after 15 minutes and tried to do something more useful with my life.
A meticulous account of the operations of the Stasi (State secret police) in the GDR prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall. If you want singing and dancing this is not your film but if you want a glimpse of what happens when the state sets out to spy on you in order to preserve the 'proletarian democracy' or your 'democratic freedoms' or whatever, this is the nightmarish truth. Beautifully written, directed and acted and absorbing till the the last line. If you find it overpowering do perservere, you really need to hear the last line before you return to today's realities.
We caught up with Oscar-winning director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck when he was in London to talk about his superb debut feature film, The Lives of Others.
