The Long Firm

During the swinging sixties in London, there was only one crime boss in Soho that mattered: the indomitable Harry Starks (Mark Strong). With a reputation for savagery and generosity in equal measure, Starks ruled central London with a coercive fist and his favourite implement of torture: the red-hot poker. Based on Jake Arnott's best selling novel, which combines fact with fiction, this is a retrospective tale of criminality in the 1960s through to the 1980s, told from the view of four characters as they encounter the menacing Starks.

    GREAT

Harry is an East-End, working-class, homosexual, Jewish mobster, who is striving for acceptance in London. Based on Jake Arnott's book of the same name the dramatisation has been true to the original version and leading cast members met up with Arnott several times on set to discus their characters and the story. This is obvious because it's brilliant. Definitely worth watching. A well-acted, well-scripted, well-directed production

    The likeable gangster

In many ways this is the ultimate British gangster story that details a world which is both seedy and glamorous. Mark Strong (of Fever Pitch and Our Friends In The North fame) plays the lead role of a homosexual, Jewish gangster and it is an virtuoso performance. The best episode (they all centre on a character affected by Strong's gang leader) is Jimmy's Story which features the excellent Phil Daniels. Shows the type of dramas the BBC are capable of producing.
