Frightening, and that's just the music
By dustyhendrix from Cumbria , 09 Jun 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Bob Hoskins makes Don Corleone look amateurish as he wages his war on gangland London over one long brutal day.
With echoes of the Don, Hoskins looks to make his business legit only to have his aspirations blown up, so to speak, by an invisible force that leaves no clues. As his men turn up dead across the city, Hoskins portrays brilliantly a man gradually realising his empire is coming down. The ferocity of his revenge on just about anyone with a bit of previous is unbelievably powerful yet ultimately he is dealing with forces out of his league, providing the theme of the little man trying to beat all the odds to keep what he has.
Made at a time when Thatcherism appeared on the political scene, Hoskins business aspirations and his entrepreneurship run parallel with his bloodletting. Accompanied by a wild electro synth soundtrack, The Long Good Friday is a great British gangster movie.- Was this review helpful to you?

This is my manor!
By manonfireuk (317 reviews) from Liverpool , 28 Jan 2013This is one of those movies that has been on my to watch list for many years and I've only just caught it for the first time. It's a pretty decent London gangster epic with lots of recognisable young faces of actors you will know a lot better from some of their more recent work. The first twenty minutes was a bit fractured and it takes a while before it all comes together and you realise what is going on. Parts of the film have dated badly but the most distracting aspect is the very naff soundtrack which makes scenes of tension seem very silly. I probably would have rated this higher if I had seen the original release, maybe this is one movie that would benefit from a remake if a decent director and cast were sought.- Was this review helpful to you?

TLGF - What's All The Fuss.........
By Gunnar (17 reviews) from Lincolnshire , 16 Jul 2012The film itself has now been given the status of 'classic' - which it totally deserves.
Unlike other gangster movies, this film makes no bones about its lead character. He is a nasty, vicious, brutal man determined to keep control of his empire. The filming is dull in tone which, to my mind at least, adds a touch of gritty realism in the style of Caine's 'Get Carter' (another Gem).
Thoughout the film, Helen Mirren plays the role of 'mobster gal' with finesse and quite a bit of elegance. The only jarring note is the 'cardboardness' of the Americans in the film.
Other than that, TLGF is a gem!- Was this review helpful to you?

great movie but so-so bluray quality
By sftoon (1 review) , 31 Mar 2012Great movie but I was disappointed by the quality of the blu-ray. Looks like no remastering of picture or sound was done. Incidental music is very late-70's synth-centric, and is louder than the dialogue, so we had to continually adjust volume up and down. Picture sometimes changed hue and brightness. A missed opportunity to spruce up what is a classic british crime movie.- Was this review helpful to you?
