i never did get to read the second book of this trilogy and after seeing this i was certain i had missed out.
the battle sequences are just jaw dropping and massive is not a big enough word to describe these visual delights.but its not just the action and SFX that make this a supurb achievement. We all thought that Jackson may have had a fluke on the first one.how wrong we were.
the largely untested main characters again deliver superior performances and make us feel like we should be there suffering with them.
possibly a little too much camera panning for visual landscape effects but it is a pretty country after all.
extremely violent for its 12 rating (my daughter found it quite cringy at times) and very long, almost three hours, its a marathon of a film.
Can't wait for return of the king!
To adapt such a claasic book to film and to pull it off is an achievement itself and this does as much as anyone could probably expect from a film version. As someone who has read the book quite a number of times, it is true that sometimes I was a little disappointed if the film didn't exactly follow the book or changed something a little, but there was so much that was done well that I had to rate this as a top film. If you have read the book (and perhaps listensed to the BBC radio series - also excellent), there is so much that depends on your imagination, that you wonder whether this film will simply not live up; however the effort that has gone into making the effects and the scenery really fit the book is just tremendous. All the actors play their parts very well but I think it is Peter Jacksons overall vision of how to portray this that really wins the day and will make this a film adaption that people will come back to again and again.
