This is a must-have title if Blu-Ray is to become the new de facto.
Please make it perfection; may time did I think during the DVD's that this needed more definition to be all it can be- Was this review helpful to you?

(19)A Film that will be a Timeless Classic in the Decades to come
By Zydor (147 reviews) from Headley Down , 05 Mar 2013An Epic Series of three films that were in reality all filmed at once over a three year period. The latter was a Production gambol, but it paid off, with a highly focused Team who for three years, lived the three films as they made them - continuity between all three is therefore Superb. I am a fan of the Genre, and Sci-Fi in general, yet I find when I get a non Sci-Fi Film Buff to focus on this and give it a go.... they start with the first film, and just cant stop watching it. A magnificent series of three films. The last one? .... wow .... what a tour-de-force, magnificent, with incredible scenes as the forces of 'good & evil' gather for the final battles. Yet these battle scenes are carefully crafted with minimal blood and gore, and still retain their magnetism of a battle depiction, even for the pacifist amongst us. A lesson there for film makers - you don't have to rip open a zillion chests in battle scenes to be successful :) The trio is well worth watching in order, you will miss many subtle parts without that chronological viewing. For me however, the best has to be the last astonishing Film of the three, where it all comes together. Magnificent, Truly Magnificent...... sprint don't walk to view these (especially the last one).- Was this review helpful to you?

Not extended
By ax (58 reviews) from birmingham , 13 Apr 2012Not as good as the extended versions which are make the film into a slowly aged wine the shorter versions are too bombastic and lack charm though they were all great when they were shown in the cinema- Was this review helpful to you?

I was never a fan...but now I am
By Shaunpanda (10 reviews) , 05 Sep 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
When the Lord of the Rings first came out I did not enjoy it one bit. Maybe it was my youth, or maybe I just wasn't ready for wizards and Hobbits yet.
Now, after seeing these Blu Rays, I love them!!
It took me a while to get over the cheery cheery Hobbit nonsense (why are they always laughing?) but as soon as I did I became engrossed in the story.
The Blu Ray sound and picture are good and add to the immersion of the film.
I knocked off a star because a lot of the effects don't stand the test of time (they look a bit ropey in the lovely Blu light) and they are kind of a big part of the movie.
I am now willing to give the Extended Versions a go!!- Was this review helpful to you?

Very happy if biased Tolkienite
By MarsSkirata (9 reviews) from Glasgow , 24 Aug 2011One of the greatest film series' ever produced. As a fan of the books I worried that it would never match or even compare to my vision of Middle-earth but I had nothing to fear. Yes it misses a few things out and changes a few things here and there but it all fits together very well. It is clear from the start that the director and writing team were fans of the book and this is a lesson that should have been taken on board by the pathetic Harry Potter films as well as some other book to film conversions. The cast was very well chosen and you get a genuine sense of chemistry between them without which the series would have fallen on its face. Added to that is the filming locations which literally transport you to Middle-earth and this is a proper experience not just watching a film. It is likely there will never be a series that matches the scale, scope and magic of these films ever again.- Was this review helpful to you?
