Disturbing psychological drama, both because of Bale's gaunt and emaciated appearance and the intensity of his performance; the movie's grim, grey atmosphere.

Christian Bale looking his worst and acting at his best. If you like films that make you think, then this film is awesome and not to be missed. Though it's sinistercism will mean it's not everybones cup of tea.
Scarred throughout with an underlying dark feel to it. The machinist takes you into the mind of Bale's charachter Trevor who suffers from extreme insomnia. As the film progresses it allows you and Trevor to simultaneously unravel the trail of clues leading to the cause of his insomnia. The backdrop of the average dull toned town that he lives in adds even more realism to this must see film.
Great script, brilliant acting and very taught directing. Even though I pretty much knew what was going on (another film nearly ruined by thickos who can't click a box saying that their review contains spoilers - and it's always the morons who 'didn't get it'...), this film really wasn't about the unraveling of some contrived plot with a 'killer' twist (a la shallow efforts, like fight club, sixth sense and memento - that's right , I said it!), but rather about the unfurling of a man's mind. It was this aspect of the film and Christian Bale's hypnotic performance that had me gripped.
Fight Club runs for over two ego bloated hours and I still couldn't care less about anyone in that film, but I could really feel the confusion and trauma coursing through Bale's character. A great character driven piece and gripping throughout, if you enjoy films that deal with raw emotion and people's descent into madness or on the edge of a breakdown (the swimmer, lost weekend) then this is a must!
Christian Bale has stunned fans with his emaciated appearance as he prepares to play drug addicted boxer Dickie Eklund in a new drama. The Batman actor was hardly recognisable on Monday (13Jul09) as he was photographed looking gaunt walking through Los Angeles, where he is filming The Fighter. Method actor Bale, who lost 63 pounds (29 kilograms) for his role in 2004's The Machinist, has apparently embarked on a severe diet to play Eklund, whose welterweight boxing career ended in 1985 because...
