Cult Classic!By Alistair McFarlane from Leeds, England , 25 Mar 2005
[Highly rated reviewer]Christian Bale looking his worst and acting at his best. If you like films that make you think, then this film is awesome and not to be missed. Though it's sinistercism will mean it's not everybones cup of tea.
Scarred throughout with an underlying dark feel to it. The machinist takes you into the mind of Bale's charachter Trevor who suffers from extreme insomnia. As the film progresses it allows you and Trevor to simultaneously unravel the trail of clues leading to the cause of his insomnia. The backdrop of the average dull toned town that he lives in adds even more realism to this must see film.

Brill o padsBy a customer , 16 Nov 2012Marvellous movie. Dark, moody and full of twists and turns.
Bale looks awful, the sets and photography are gorgeous. Watch it!
Take a punt. It's worth it.By MzBizkitz (67 reviews) , 13 Nov 2012I really enjoyed this one. Can't believe how much weight Christian Bale lost for this film!
Kept me guessing about what was going to happen next.
Grim in parts but stick with it, it's worth it.
one of the weirdest films I've ever seenBy cheesekake (1498 reviews) from uk , 01 Nov 2012found this film completely weird, really couldn't understand it till half way through, but Bale made it a compelling watch, he looked terrible in it but its definitely gotta be his best performance yet.
defo worth watching
Intensely psychological, thought provoking film.By Bex1775 (14 reviews) from Hereford , 16 Oct 2012This is a very dark film - not horrific or 'scary', but is intense and how it delves into the psychology of the main character (incredibly well portrayed by Mr Bale) is so well done it's worth another few watches to really get all the nuances. It's not a film to watch if you want to come to the end and feel uplifted - it will not do this, but it will make you think. Brilliant.
