Drama and comedy: but not black-and-white
By a customer from Cardiff, Wales , 24 Oct 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
'The Maggie' is a drama in which two fundamentally different cultures come into head-to-head collision. The easy-going traditional values of the crew of an old Scottish coastal trading vessel are challenged by a modern U.S. businessman. But, typically for the work of director Alexander Mackendrick, the film does not resolve the issues it raises. The good and bad aspects of both cultures are shown, all the characters are sympathetically drawn, and at the end of the film no one can be said to have 'won' or 'lost' outright. There is a good deal of humour here, as well as fine location shots of the River Clyde and the Scottish islands. The viewer is given an insight of the lifestyle of the remote island communities, where the nearest telephone was a ten-mile walk away, the normal method of long-distance travel was by boat, and dense fog could come up at a moment's notice. This family is still debating the rights and wrongs of each party in the film: was the 'wee boy' Dougie, the ship's boy, really the worst rascal of all? Thoughtful and amusing, a good evening's family entertainment.- Was this review helpful to you?

(12)the maggie
By a customer , 13 Jun 2011A wily old skipper dupes the shipping office and a wealthy American into letting him take the Americans valuable cargo up the Scottish coast. A chase film at a leisurly pace, especially as the Maggie runs aground right at the off. The film is also a reflection of changing times, the American symbolising the coming new age of speed and efficiency and the Maggie the disappearing slower pace of life. I love this film- Was this review helpful to you?

'The Maggie'
By Mark57 (13 reviews) from York , 23 Jul 2009As Ealing studios comedies go, this is not the best. It's 'ok' but does not have the usual pace and it really drags in part. Did they really shout and bark at each other so much when the got excited in those days? The American 'anti-hero's' characterisation is suspect, but then the whole plot is contrived. Never mind, that's what makes the comedy work.
Watch out for the young lad's interesting 'bowl on the head' haircut!- Was this review helpful to you?

Slow start but stick with it
By a customer from 2nd row from the back, Lincolnshire , 25 Sep 2008Best thing about the film now is probably the insight into Glasgow and shipping of days gone by. So well worth a view if you're into twentieth century history or transport. As a comedy its a slow burn, initially seems a poor relation of the more well known Ealings but as the plot develops so does the humour.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great Fun
By a customer from Dorset, England , 01 Apr 2008What a joy to see this old film. Yes one can consider it old fashioned, but the direction is excellent, and with great photography that shows off the Western Isles as they were. These old puffas went on for another 15 plus years. A simple story that was gentle, amusing and thought provoking for even todays consumer work driven must haves.
Thank you for getting it on DVD.- Was this review helpful to you?
