A Classic...only just!!
By Micthetic (103 reviews) from Manchester , 20 Apr 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
I have to say that i was a little let down when i revisited this film after having first watched it years ago on the TV as a small boy.
Yes the cinematography, music and cast are first rate but it does show its age. There is a certain artificiality about some of the scenes, and the Chico (Horst Buchholz) interludes i found particularly annoying.
If you take it for what it is then its an enjoyable couple of hours.
Did you know that ,of all the main stars, the gutless Robert Vaughn character and Eli Wallach are the only survivors! Sobering.- Was this review helpful to you?

(37)magnificently ok
By MrsGrunt (3 reviews) from Derbyshire, UK , 12 May 2010The colour, the atmosphere, the sets, the score and the charisma of the star actors are where the most enjoyment came from in this film.
Seven hired guns agree, each for their own reasons - mainly 'it seemed a good idea at the time' - to protect a mexican village from bandits for a poor fee.
The gunslinger as existential hero.... but it never quite fulfils this potential. Somehow all the characters are viewed too much from afar.
The ending of the movie seemed surprisingly throwaway, and flat, tied up with a hastiness that's frustrating, given that tensions are built up through the film that are then never quite satisfyingly resolved.
Ah well, disappointingly not one of the stronger classics, but I guess a classic nonetheless.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not as good as the original
By Bassman71 (617 reviews) from Didsbury, England , 04 Jan 2010Mexican village gets raided by bandits, villagers fed up of it, ask wise man for answer, tells them to hire 'guns', 'guns' come to protect village.
Western remake of Kurosawa's epic Seven Samurai which follows the original in parts but is no way near as good or as dark. It is easier to get into though & a has a very strong cast.
A mention too for Elmer Bernstein's score which is absolutely superb.- Was this review helpful to you?

Sunday Best
By a customer from Norwich , 20 Jan 2009One of my all-time favourite Westerns and I must confess, Im not a massive fan of the Western genre. An easy watch, a good story line, and a top notch cast. Just as Westerns should be!- Was this review helpful to you?
