Two films by multi-Oscar nominated director Billy Wilder. Wilder's films were known for having substance as well as mass appeal - a rare combination in heady '40s Hollywood where quantity was the only yardstick for most studios. 'The Major and the Minor' (1942) is a comedy starring the incomparable Ginger Rodgers - a young woman disillusioned with the big city, trying to get home. Lacking cash, she disguises herself as a child called Su-Su to get a child ticket. She is befriended by a kindly Major (Ray Milland) who insists on looking after the poor but deceitful waif who, in turn, falls in love with him. In 'Bachelor Mother' (1939), single saleswoman Polly Parrish (Ginger Rogers) visits an employment agency in her lunch hour after receiving a week's notice of dismissal. When she leaves the agency, Polly notices that a small baby has been left on the steps of a foundling home. She takes the child to the authorities, but ends up looking after it herself. Everyone assumes that the child is Polly's, including David Merlin (David Niven), the playboy son of the store owner. David manages to save Polly's job, only to find himself falling in love with her.

This movie is terrible. I only got it by accident because it was part of a box set. The plot about a woman who dresses up as a 12 year old child and then has an army major fall in love with her is dubious to say the least.

There's no way this movie would ever get made today.

Quite Bizarre

What a strange film this was. Here we have a 31 year old womam pretending to be a 12 year old, getting befriended by a major who thinks she's a girl, and suggesting she goes to his cadet's college where she has to date all the 13-14 year old 'officers'. Would the film have been allowed in these PC times of ours? Billy Wilder's first film bears one resemblance to Some Like It Hot in that there is a common theme of identity change, but this film fails in that there is no real warming to Ginger Rogers in her role as the girl/woman. So out of our time it's unbelievable.
