This British wartime drama focuses on the crucial battle for control of Malta. Lieutenant Peter Ross, a Royal Air Force reconnaissance photographer, gets shot down over Malta while flying to Egypt. Since he cannot get off the island, the British forces there employ his talents to help defeat the Nazis. Ross sets out to find and photograph the location of the Nazi forces attacking the island--but he still finds time to fall in love with Maria, a local girl. The film mixes archival combat footage with documentary-style re-enactments to create a realistic portrayal of the historic battle.

Intended as a cinematic tribute to the island that was awarded the George Cross for its courage during the Second World War, this is a remarkably restrained drama in comparison to the other accounts of wartime heroics produced by the British film industry in the decade after VE Day. Blending romance and intrigue with convincing combat sequences, director Brian Desmond Hurst presents a moving human story without slipping into melodrama. Alec Guinness is perhaps overly subdued as the aerial photographer scouring the Mediterranean for enemy activity, but Flora Robson is superb as the mother whose children experience the sharply contrasting fortunes of war.
Glib propaganda piece which is not very excitingly written or characterized, and fails to convince on any but the most elementary level.
This is a good film restricted by what
film makers of old meant the viewer to believe what war was like. Far too stiff upper lip,not a word out of place
A good storyline and a regular cast of post-war acting greats. Alec Guinness and Jack Hawkins in particular.
The movie uses a lot of original library footage of the bombardments
which spoils the effect because of its
quality. Black and White 4:3 format.
makes you think what it was like to keep malta british
