Saving Malta ,Stiff upper lip style
By a customer from Colchester Essex , 12 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This is a good film restricted by what
film makers of old meant the viewer to believe what war was like. Far too stiff upper lip,not a word out of place
A good storyline and a regular cast of post-war acting greats. Alec Guinness and Jack Hawkins in particular.
The movie uses a lot of original library footage of the bombardments
which spoils the effect because of its
quality. Black and White 4:3 format.- Was this review helpful to you?

(8)Film also Deserves Medal!
By Seedyvee (183 reviews) from Grantham , 17 Dec 2011This film very effectively combines the personal and the bigger historical picture of the plight of Malta during WWII. The picture excels in long range shots and very realistic aerial battle engagements which indeed look like actual newsreel. The romance fits neatly into the whole and provides a poignant insight into the sufferings of a particular Maltese family caught up in the war. Apart from the main actors, that of the mother of Marie was especially strong.- Was this review helpful to you?

A forgotten story of courage in extreme adversity
By a customer , 18 Sep 2011I wanted to see this film having recently read 'a long road to freedom'= the first hand account of a young soldier from NI who survived the horror of Malta in WW2. This film animates the book and tells the story of the true bravery and courage of both the Maltese people and the young soldiers tasked with protecting the island during WW2.- Was this review helpful to you?

Historic, moving & true
By a customer , 09 Jun 2011Insightful, presents the choice the Maltese people made well. Amazing use of real footage. A little known (by my generation - being 30 something ;-) tale of perseverance in an island nation that is heroic and inspiring - Europe still has much to thank them for.- Was this review helpful to you?
