Antonio Banderas made the jump from Spanish star to international hunk with this, his first big English-language movie, a musical drama based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Oscar Hijuelos. Banderas and Armand Assante, the bad guy in Judge Dredd, star as two Cuban musicians who arrive in postwar America seeking love, fame and fortune. The film positively sizzles when the music gets going, and the mambo itself is as much a character in the movie as the actors. Director Arne Glimcher — this was his directorial debut — went on to make the Sean Connery thriller Just Cause.
