Nostalgia rules in this periodically average resurrection of one of the 1960s most famous TV shows. Back as the improbably named Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, Robert Vaughn and David McCallum are lured out of retirement by new UNCLE boss Patrick Macnee (taking a siesta from The Avengers) to stop evil THRUSH agent Anthony Zerbe from holding the world to nuclear ransom. The plot is James Bond on the cheap and Ray Austin's direction is definitively lacklustre, but Vaughn and McCallum are one of those natural double acts and the chemistry between them hasn't faded with time. The Bond connection is underlined by a cheeky cameo from George Lazenby as the Aston Martin driving spy. This was intended as the pilot for a new television series that never materialised; ever since the huge success of Mission Impossible's big-screen conversion, there have been rumours of a possible big-budget UNCLE movie.
