Adapted from Anthony Armstrong's short story The Case of Mr Pelham, this wonderfully improbable chiller affords the rare opportunity to see Roger Moore being acted off the screen — by Roger Moore! The respectable business executive whose life is transformed by a car crash is a drip of the first order, but the sinister alter ego who escapes while he is unconscious is a rip-roaring cad. Veteran director Basil Dearden just manages to sustain the eerie atmosphere and, even though the mistaken identity card is overplayed and the ending is telegraphed, it's very watchable.

Roger Moore is without a doubt one of the most talented actors England has ever produced - the problem is that he has never taken his talent very seriously. Thus you tend to associate him with shallow, superficial acting because of the roles he has regularly taken on in his career, which demanded no more than this. In this film however we see him playing the most demanding role of his screen career, having a decent script to work with for once, and of course under expert direction. This is perhaps the only 'serious' film Roger ever appeared in and he acts everyone else off the screen. If only the film had been a commercial success then perhaps he would have taken on more of these 'serious' type roles, but unfortunately it suffered from very poor distribution and so made very little money at the time. Now however we can enjoy this masterpiece on DVD - essential viewing for any Roger Moore fan or fan of good acting in general.
