This thoughful and well acted film is an absolute classic and well worth seeing.

(4)Fascinating and absorbing portrayal of a true story
By Primestop (16 reviews) , 15 Jan 2013I rented this film after reading Ben MacIntyre's well researched book 'Operation Mincemeat', which gives a detailed and fascinating account of the whole plot to trick the Germans in to changing their plans to repel the Allied invasion of southern Europe. The film deviates from the true account to enable the plot to flow (and in 1956 to protect what were still official secrets!) but that doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the movie. Well acted, with a captivating snapshot of what wartime London looked like, the clipped accents and portrayal of 1940's moral values provide an absorbing side interest.- Was this review helpful to you?

well made telling of actual war trick
By itstinks (681 reviews) from North of Reading , 25 Nov 2012Based on a real incident but with some dramatic license to add more drama and expand the story to make it a reasonable length.
Even though you know what happened it still creates some suspense and gets you involved.
Worth a watch.- Was this review helpful to you?

I dreamed a dead man won a fight, I dreamed the man was I!
By WiseOldBob (37 reviews) from York , 13 Feb 2009No wonder we British won the war with this amount of clipped posh accents and cups of tea, though we do appreciate the help from the Yanks, in this case a simpering Lucy the librarian. I absolutely love this film with it's eerie seriousness and long, creepy scenes like whewn they're dressing the body. Wierd. It's an excellent film to watch at home when the central heatings broken down or your girlfriend's turned in early. Clifton Webb is just fantastic as intelligence office Ewan Montagu with some fantaqstic chin-work, and the British High Command is admirably displayed as a stuck-up bunch of pompous twits. Just like the real thing!- Was this review helpful to you?
