The Man Without A Face

In Mel Gibson's directorial debut, THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE, Chuck Nordstadt (Nick Stahl) has idealized the memory of his deceased fighter pilot father so much that he dreams of one day walking in his footsteps by attending military school. When he fails the entrance exam at his father's alma mater, Chuck asks former teacher Justin McLeod (Mel Gibson), a disfigured recluse living in the coastal village where Chuck and his family are vacationing, to help tutor him. Chuck and McLeod develop a special friendship that helps both to overcome their tragic, difficult pasts.

Mel Gibson marked his directorial debut with this low-key, coming-of-age drama set in the late 1960s. Gibson also takes the title role of the horribly scarred former teacher, who lives a reclusive life away from the gossip of his small-town neighbours. He is gradually drawn out of his shell by an unhappy young boy (Nick Stahl) who secures Gibson's services as a tutor, but their close relationship eventually comes back to haunt him. Gibson takes a back seat to his young lead, and Stahl doesn't disappoint, delivering a moving, intense performance. The support cast, including Margaret Whitton as Stahl's marriage-happy mother, plays characters that are also skilfully drawn, and, although Gibson the director sometimes errs too much on the side of sentimentality, it remains an assured debut.

This film is superb, Mel Gibson is excellent as is the young man playing the troubled boy. Is society really this cruel - yes is the answer.

    Watch this movie!

I loved this movie! Excellent performances from Mel Gibson and Nick Stahl as the young boy. A very touching tale of a friendship that outsiders want to destroy because they don't like it. I must admit I had a tear in my eye at the end!

    All go for Gibson's Apocalypto

    • 26 Jul 2005

Mel Gibson, the man behind last year's controversial film The Passion Of The Christ, is to delve once again into ancient history for his next project. His new film, Apocalypto, will be set some 3,000 years ago, in the ancient culture of the Mayans, and it is thought that the film will be filmed using a Mayan dialect. Disney will distribute the film in the US, having previously worked with Gibson on films such as Signs and Ransom. Meanwhile, the film will be distributed worldwide by Gibson's own Read more
