I looked forward to Marquee 25 Years with great expectation, having headlined there six times myself and promoted a double bill of acts there many years ago.
Host Dave Dee carried great enthusiasm and talent into his role, but a terrible script, lighting and sound didn't help him. The producer, Maurice Bacon, no stranger to the stage at the Marquee himself, put together a disjointed pastiche of interviews. Marquee manager Jack Barry was interesting and Alexis Corner gave an amusing account of the sixties and seventies along the lines of 'If you remember much about it, you were not in the scene!'
Ian Matthews stood out as an artist. Man, Wishbone Ash and Marillion were excellent, but why have Ten Years After filmed doing 'I'm Going Home'. Yan! Yawn! No imagination in that decision. Alvin Lee was one of the greatest jazz rock guitarists of his time and that song was underlined at Woodstock and did not need repeating. The rest was very forgettable.
In reviewing these concerts after 25 years of a great club, one must remember that the review is of the film, not of the talent of the musicians. The whole thing was too loose, without professional craft. What a shame!
